Cambodia is hosting one of international Buddhist festivals, the Vesakha Buja, from 25-29 April to celebrate the Buddha's birthday, reports Radio France Internationale.

Thousands of Buddhist monks from China, Japan, India, Korea and the 10 Asean countries converged in Siem Reap City to pray for peace and to celebrate the Vesakha Buja or Buddha's birthday which falls on the 15th day of the moonrise in the lunar calendar or the 28th of April in the solar calendar.

Today's event will include performances of an epic about Buddha's enlightenment by artists from Japan, India, Korea, China and the 10 Asean countries. Cambodian performers will perform the part when the Buddha attained his enlightenment and when he outsmarted the demon (pchanh mear).

On 28th of April, which is today, there will be a big religious procession around Siem Reap town with many vehicles will be donned in Buddhist decorations and a ceremony of Buddhist monks chanting religious blessing.

Mr. Thong Khon, Minister of Tourism, said the event is a cultural and tourism cooperation to attract more international tourists to the Angkor tourism sites.
