Cambodia warned all foreign diplomatic missions

The Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has on 26th April sent a diplomatic note to all foreign diplomatic missions in Cambodia reminding them not to interfere in the internal affairs of Cambodia, reports Cambodian Express News.

The note reminds all foreign embassies that they must conduct themselves within international diplomatic norms. The note reminds all foreign embassies to respect article 41.1 of the Viena Convention regarding international diplomacy which states "they also have the duty not to interfere in the internal affairs of that State".

It is not sure what triggers the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to issue such warning, but according to the wording of the diplomatic note, it is referring to some certain chiefs of diplomatic missions who have acted like they are proconsuls in Cambodia by acting as government's critics and giving Cambodia lessons on all issues.

In the past, many foreign embassies, notably the U.S Embassy, have been very vocal about Cambodia's human rights abuses and official corruption in Cambodia. In June 2009, Ambassador Rodley said that Cambodia is losing $500 million annually through official corruption. And on 26th April 2010, she had called on the Cambodian authority to punish those responsible for the illegal timber trades and the deforestation of Cambodian forests which were found out to be committed by powerful officials and rich businessmen with ties to the the Cambodian top leadership.
